Val has been an inspiration to me. I attended an Ananda weekend with her at the meditation retreat at Ananda Village a few years ago and I still have such a great feeling when I think of my experiences with her. The weekend was incredible, Val guided meditations during our visit including a walking meditation. Val is so approachable and easy to talk to, I learned so much from her during that particular weekend. I also attended her Ananda meditation group in Reno, Nevada and that was such a joy in my life. I learned the Ananda technique of meditation and it is the only method that is able to quiet my busy mind. I still drop Val a line now and then when I have a question of the spiritual nature. I can't say enough about her quiet, beautiful, fun, loving energy and it's a blessing to have been a part of her classes. Tracy U |

MEDITATE! Brain scans show that people who meditate regularly have less cognitive decline and brain shrinkage — a classic sign of Alzheimer's — as they age. Andrew Newberg of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine says yoga meditation of 12 minutes a day for two months improved blood flow and cognitive functioning in seniors with memory problems.

WHAT ARE THREE MAIN THINGS/TIPS A WOMAN SHOULD KNOW WHEN SHE MEDITATES?
Set aside the same time or times each day for your meditation. Meditate 5-15 mins and be very consistant about it, then increase your time as you can. Be comfortable, the mind has no chance to be peaceful and still if the body is restless and uncomfortable.
SHOULD THERE BE MUSIC PLAYING?
Meditation is concentration; taking the mind off many things and placing it on one thing at a time. I find music distracting.
WHAT POSITION SHOULD HER BODY BE IN?
Sit Erect! A chair is fine, or a comfortable cross legged position on the floor or on a cushion(s). If you sit on a chair, try not to lean back. Meditation benches are helpful too. What ever your position, keep you back straight, chest raised, head erect, eyes closed, and hands resting palmed upturned, in your lap.
IS THERE A SPECIFIC STYLE OF BREATHING SHE SHOULD USE?
There are many types of breathing techniques. These techniques are called pranayama - yogic style meditations. Try a Measured Breath. Inhale to a count of six, hold the breath for six, and exhale for six. Adjust the count to what is comfortable for you, so there is no straining involved. Do this for three rounds.
